Report from South Kona

Off Line / 64 ” This Morning
Hey I’m back , a unnamed person not myself reset and plugged in the router wrong so we were all off line . Well it was strange because for a short time I still could get my lap top online but no other computers . Anyway it’s solved ! I,ve been powering away working and of course the holidays are coming so in a couple of weeks the whole thing starts .

Surf is not happening not a ripple coming in . This time of year we should be getting the first of the North swells coming in and the Hurricane season is about done with little or no action theis year. Its the east coast that gets all the Bad Boy storms . Yesterday as I drove home the rain did come down here and there in heavy torrents almost enough to pull over at one point since the wipers couldn’t even clear the windshield.

This morning the temp was a cold 64 degrees . The sun out and birds chirping away . The ocean flat down the coast with very little white water if any . If there is a lot of white water and currents . Along with big splashes it,s a sign that there may be waves in or arriving soon .

So the video project is coming along . My lap top is way too full and after burning a disk I’m going to have to store or trash the old files . They are just too big . The good part with my little camera , while playing a tape I can snap stills . Now that is another thing , do I save these new mini dv s that I am copying to or just go over them . ??? So one disk is done and I,m ready to do the next . Up to about tape 6 now .

Ok off for another Big Day !!!

So off now on a new week ! Monday , mostly my easy day , Nice weather though the surf dropped to nothing . Flat as a board not even a ripple going . It was a breezy day and the whole afternoon could have been spent surfing. Just had my smoothie and wheat grass , cruised home and started my project .

All the movies from when the boys were babies. Are on old VHS c taps that are going bad . Some of the footage is lost but not as much so far as i had thought . The first one had gone almost completely , I think I’ll rewind it back and forth a couple of times just to see if it will play . Second and third tapes had most of it all still playing . What i have to do is play them in the old cam corder into my camera that will put them on mini dv . Then they can be played into I Movie . It’s a bit of a hassle , the good part is it’s being saved and will last longer than the tapes have . So today I got two of the tapes done and there is about maybe 40 total . Each one 30 minutes or less , also minus the bad spots . Now that i have the process going and all the hook ups set , things should go faster . I am keeping them as uncut as possible there was a couple of less then a second bits that I left out . One good thing is that when the mini dv is played into i Movie it separates out the bad bits as it makes clips that can be assembled and made into one disc. I may take little clips from here and there and remix them but for now just the uncut version . Plus what fun I can have of all this baby vid of the boys . LOL LOL .

So the weekend flowed by , Saturday spent down in town working some in the morning . Started the day right at Kahaluu , many people were out in the water . The water was smooth some waves now and again . many of them going by with out a rider . After running around a bit I hit it sown in the after noon . At first like Thursday and Friday , when by the time I got down to the water it was very windy . A strong on shore breeze blowing . I really should have went out those two days too . With the long work days and limited time before darkness fell , I punked out and didn’t hit the water . Anyway Saturday I,m glad that I went out , at first there was still a crowd in the water . Though once out many of the waves came to me . I was doing my usual lurking just inside the reef, catching the ones that roll up a bit and re form . The sun was bright and hot , water warm waves not giant but fun several rides through out the afternoon .

Fired up the BBQ again for some chicken , done is a kind of Jamaican Hawaiian style . A cross between Huli Huli and Jerk lol . They had some great green beans too , those went in a pan with olive oil and garlic , plus just a small bit of butter . With the rice cooker ready we had a nice little dinner with the green beans and Chicken .

After a few lattes Chris and I went for a mario cart session on the Wii and raced many of the courses . Battling the talented Japanese racers , who play a mean race . Then we got drawn into many episodes of Doctor Who . One of My favorites , Chris and Kyle too . Next thing its midnight and time for that late night spliff before retiring for the night .

Today Sunday , we continued on the clean up of the boys clothes . Getting rid of anything not used . Hurrah ! Fired up the BBQ again for some roasting of chillis for a new batch of Salsa , I have been in the habit of making some each weekend lately . Its the roasted Onion and chilis that make it . So tonight I,m stir frying the last chicken with some Bok Choi , the small baby ones , along with some carrots for color .

Started a projest that i have been wanting to do for a while . Converting all the old Analog movies to digital. There are many old tapes from the boys early years and it’s time consuming but I’m all set and just need a couple of new mini dv tapes . The hard part is going to be converting the large files to smaller format . The first couple I did are huge files . Yikes !

I did a lot today and by the time I could surf the wind had picked up and blown out the surf , that had dropped a bit anyway . The on shore wind blew the tops down causing the waves to roll up and get all sloppy . This morning when I went by there was a few waves breaking on the outside . The swell is still hitting over on the north shore of Oahu , The waves zzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzz ( ok I fell asleep and now this is going out in the morning . ) So there is quite a bit if white water this morning on the coast . As I drive into town a better picture of the surf will be seen from the road. I am going to bring the Manta 46 , Black Beauty is my name for it , a big wave body board . It can be duck dived under the white water much better then the long board if the waves are a bit unruly .

Ok I am goofing off and must get going another big day today !

Had a nice little day , after getting up early , had a short morning nap before going off to work . This is the morning where I work up here in the Country , up Mauka , up slope , Makai toward the water . Any way , I spend the morning at this very cool 50s Hawaiian style ranch house just up from Hookens beach . Then all along Painted Church Road and up to Rock Bottom road . All over looking Kealakekua Bay and in the middle of the Kona Coffee Country. many of the coffee trees are full of red cherries right now and some picking is going on . All the coffee here is still hand picked mostly on small farms . When the roasting is going on you can enjoy that pleasing coffee burned toast smell that wanders thru the air.

I had my usual Pineapple smoothie and wheat grass shot for lunch. Made my way down to the coast about 4 p for a surf check . The waves still have gone down and after hanging out sitting on my truck didn’t paddle out cruised home . Made a stop at the Chinese BBQ , they are very good very fresh vegetables , a couple runs it they are there 7 days a week all day long . I really like the shrimp and mixed vegetables , but had the sesame chicken to night . The winter swells will be here soon to test our water skills and supply some thrilling rides.
